Maison Ikkoku Wiki

Yotsuya (四谷) is the resident of room 4 of Ikkoku-kan and a major character of Maison Ikkoku.

Biography[]

He is a mysterious man who finds enjoyment in mooching, voyeurism, and generally tormenting his next-door neighbor Yūsaku directly and the manager Kyōko indirectly, as it is her job to repair the damage done by him, as he is famous for breaking a hole through the adjoining wall in order to be with "young Godai" (and to use a smaller hole in the wall of Yūsaku's room to peep into Akemi's), and he is willing to reveal the secrets of others if it benefits him, such as telling Kyoko what Godai does at night, in order to prevent the hole from being repaired. He is usually seen dressed in a business suit, a yukata or similarly formal attire and tends to speak in a very formal manner (even while drinking and partying with Akemi and Mrs. Ichinose), but what life he may have outside of Maison Ikkoku is a complete mystery to everyone. Yotsuya claims to have a job (but is not above stealing Yūsaku's food) and comes and goes at odd and changing hours, keeping a schedule known only to himself. His true name is never known; in fact he provided more than one given name, including Tamezo and Goro. An album in Maison Ikkoku's attic found by Kentarō reveals that the history of Maison Ikkoku is his family history.[1]

Relationships[]

Yūsaku Godai

Like Hanae and Akemi, Yotsuya takes enjoyment at Yūsaku's expense. He deliberately creates holes/entrances into Yūsaku's room despite his efforts to seal them up, knowing full well he's not welcome but letting himself in anyway. He also tricks him, makes him the but of jokes, and sticks his nose in personal affairs. He goes as far as to actually refer to him as his "play thing" and will get bored if Yūsaku is away for too long.

Hanae Ichinose and Akemi Roppongi
Partytrio

Hanae, Yotsuya, and Akemi all getting drunk and partying in Yusaku's room in the first episode.

Yotsuya frequently drinks and parties with both Akemi and Hanae frequently. The three of them often always make Yūsaku the butt of their jokes, invade his room to get drunk and party, and invade his privacy. It's likely that all three have been friends for some time, as even when they're not invading Yūsaku's room they still hang out and gossip. Though when the three of them aren't together, Yotsuya hangs out with Akemi more often (likely due to Hanae's having duties as a wife/mother during the day) with the two meeting up with each other in Godai's room even when they're not having a party. When they're not tormenting Yūsaku, they seem to also enjoy messing with Kyoko and sometimes even Mitaka.

Yotsuya seems to be attracted to Akemi. He seems to enjoy seeing her scantily dressed and he even goes as far as to enjoy peeking on her from a hole in the wall without her knowing. Despite this, she doesn't seem to mind and he never displays any romantic feelings towards her, though they still enjoy each other's company none-the-less.

Trivia[]

  • He is among the major characters whose name involves a number. His name Yotsuya means "four valleys" which is also the name of a district in Tokyo associated with a famous ghost story, therefore he is representative of the number 4, which match the number of the room he lives in.
  • He is the only tenant of Ikkoku to be highly contradictory. Despite his formal speech and clothing, his actions are the complete opposite.
  • It has been speculated among fans that Yotsuya is the same person as 'Sekoi' in another Rumiko Takahashi manga, titled Dust-spurt. In it, Sekoi is a secret agent working for the "HCIA" (Hinomaru Central Intelligence Agency).
  • His voice actor provided the voice of characters from 3 other anime adaptations of Rumiko Takahashi's manga series: Megane from Urusei Yatsura, Sasuke Sarugakure from Ranma ½ and Ryūnosuke's Father in Urusei Yatsura (2022).
  • In episode 31 of the anime version of Rumiko Takahashi's latest work, Kyokai no Rinne, a Street Vendor is featured bearing a strong resemblance to Yotsuya.
