Maison Ikkoku: The Final Chapter (めぞん一刻 完結編, Maison Ikkoku Kanketsu-hen) is an animated theatrical film set during the time frame of the final episode of the anime. It was released on February 6, 1988, as a double feature with  Urusei Yatsura: The Final Chapter

Synopsis[]

Two days before the wedding of Yūsaku and Kyōko, the tenants stir up trouble once again during their pre-celebration party. Yūsaku learns that Kyōko is anticipating a mysterious letter, and she is late at arriving at Maison Ikkoku. During the night, many characters show up, including Ibuki Yagami to celebrate her own birthday only to learn the big news. How is everybody going to handle Yagami's attitude regarding the wedding? What is the meaning of that Kyōko's letter?

When he finally smiled, I took the photo. Similar things always happened to Yūsaku. While anticipating for any upcoming field trip or sports meeting he always fell sick and couldn’t attend the event. He was born under the star of bad luck. I thought I would have to stand by him until I die, but a lady like Kyoko chose Yūsaku and said that she would look after him. It is now Kyōko's turn. Kyōko, please stand by Yūsaku. I don't have anything that I can give you, so I'll give you the picture that you kept so preciously. Please receive Yūsaku whom I have raised" (Yukari Godai)

Trivia[]

  • This movie was animated by Ajia-do Animation Works studio, in contrast to Studio Deen (that animated the main anime series). This change generated several graphical differences in comparison with the anime:
    • Some details are different from the anime (the boarding house color, the room's numbers and glass colors, the layout of the rooms among others).
    • The character faces and expressions are quite different from the ones used in the anime. Some characters who look specially different are Yūsaku Godai, Master, Kyōko Otonashi, Sakamoto, Asuna Kujō, and Yukari Godai.
  • This movie was released on February 6, 1988, between Episode 92 and Episode 93 of the anime, despite the fact that this movie takes place during the events of Episode 96 of the anime.
  • This is the only animated instance of Maison Ikkoku in which Nozomu Nikaidō appears. He was not included in the TV series nor in the OVAs.
  • This movie has several Urusei Yatsura references on it:
    • It is mentioned that Yūsaku and Kyōko's honeymoon is going to be a two-day stay at Atami (a city located in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan). In episode 89 of Urusei Yatsura, Mrs. Moroboshi wins a 2-day trip to Atami with her husband, leaving her son Ataru alone at home to spend the night with Lum.
    • Ibuki mentions Lum and makes an impression of her.
    • McEnroe and Salad's puppies are introduced, and they are named Sugar, Ginger and Pepper, just like the Trio.
  • Throughout the movie there are several alcoholic beverages that have names referencing real ones:
    • There are beer cans named "Kipin Beer". That is probably a reference to "Kirin" beer, a popular brand of japanese beer.
    • There is a "Sappori Brew" beer bottle. This may be a reference to the "Sapporo" Japanese beer brewing company.
    • There are "Sontory" cans. Those are probably a reference to "Suntory" whisky, a popular brand of japanese whisky.
    • There are "Asahin" beer cans. Those are most likely a reference to "Asahi" beer, another popular brand of japanese beer.
    • There is a "Yebissu" beer bottle. This may be a reference to the "Yebisu" japanese brand of beer.
    • A bottle of "Jhonnie Walker" old scotch whisky can be seen.
    • Some cans of "Budweisre" beer can be seen. Those are most likely a reference to the "Budweiser" brand of beer.
  • There is an inconsistency regarding the month this episode takes place on:
    • According to a wall calendar next to the pink payphone, this movie takes place on a month that has 31 days, and ends on a Tuesday the 31st.
    • But according to a wall calendar on Kyōko's room, this episode takes place on a month of April.
    • This movie aired on February 1988, and its chapter manga counterpart (Chapter 161) was published around April 1987.
  • On Yūsaku's desk there is a "Saiko" clock. That is most likely a reference to "Seiko", the Japanese maker of watches, clocks, electronic devices, semiconductors, and other products.
  • Akemi is shown having a poster of Michael Jackson in her room.
  • Throughout the movie, Nozomu Nikaidō is seen reading several comic magazines:
    • One of those says "Popoye" on it. That is most likely a reference to the American comic strip "Popeye".
    • Another one has the character of Super Mario Bros. in the cover.
  • There is a scene of Sayoko using a radio equipment, which has accurate technical information:
    • It has an AM broadcast frequency band from 525 to 1400 KHz.
    • It has a FM broadcast frequency band from 76 to 90 MHz.
    • Those radio broadcast frequency bands used in Japan varied from the ones used in America and most of the world (530 - 1700 KHz for AM, and 88 - 108 MHz for FM).
  • Yotsuya makes a reference to "Daimajin", a series of japanese films involving villages being overthrown by warlords, leading to the villagers attempting to summon Daimajin, the great demon god, to save them.
  • Mrs. Ichinose gives Kyōko a present. A new apron that was the words "Koke Koke" on it.
    • That new apron has images of Hens on it. And "Koke Koke" is the Japanese onomatopoeia for the noise that an adult Hen makes.
    • That is in contrast to Kyōko's usual apron which has images of chicks on it. And "Piyo Piyo" is the Japanese onomatopoeia for the noise that a small Chick makes.
  • There is a scene where Nozomu Nikaidō is playing with a Mahjong videogame console. That is a reference to the 1984 Bandai "Perfect Mahjong II" handheld game device.
  • The characters of Sōichirō, Kozue Nanao and Kentarō Ichinose appear only at the end during the credits of the song "Kiss of Glass".
